The Ultimate PA to FL Snowbird Checklist

Every fall, thousands of Pennsylvania residents pack up and head south for the winter — and every spring, they make the return trip north. If you are part of this annual migration, you know how much planning goes into making it work smoothly.

Whether you are a first-time snowbird or a seasoned veteran, this checklist will help you cover every base before you leave Pittsburgh and when you arrive in Florida.

Before You Leave Pennsylvania

Home Security & Maintenance

•[ ] Install a smart thermostat and set it to 55°F minimum to prevent pipe freezing
•[ ] Shut off the main water supply or have a trusted person check the home regularly
•[ ] Arrange for snow removal service (driveway and walkways)
•[ ] Set up exterior lighting on timers
•[ ] Notify your home security monitoring company of your travel dates
•[ ] Ask a trusted neighbor or property manager to check on the home weekly
•[ ] Forward your mail through USPS (usps.com) or use a mail scanning service
•[ ] Unplug non-essential electronics and appliances
•[ ] Clean out the refrigerator and pantry of perishables
•[ ] Arrange for lawn care if you will be gone into spring

Financial & Administrative

•[ ] Notify your bank and credit card companies of your travel dates to prevent fraud flags
•[ ] Set up automatic bill pay for utilities, mortgage, HOA, and insurance
•[ ] Review your homeowners insurance — confirm your policy covers extended absences
•[ ] Make sure your vehicle registration and driver's license are current
•[ ] Update your address with any important contacts (financial advisors, doctors, etc.)
•[ ] Consider a Pennsylvania mail forwarding service for important documents

Healthcare

•[ ] Schedule any routine medical or dental appointments before you leave
•[ ] Ensure you have a 90-day supply of all prescription medications
•[ ] Carry copies of all prescriptions and a list of your medications
•[ ] Identify healthcare providers near your Florida home (primary care, specialists)
•[ ] Confirm your health insurance covers out-of-state care
•[ ] If you are on Medicare, confirm your plan covers Florida providers

Vehicle

•[ ] Schedule a pre-trip vehicle inspection (oil, tires, brakes, fluids)
•[ ] Confirm your auto insurance covers extended out-of-state use
•[ ] Pack an emergency roadside kit
•[ ] Plan your route and identify rest stops — the drive from Pittsburgh to Southwest Florida is approximately 18–20 hours

When You Arrive in Florida

Setting Up Your Florida Home

•[ ] Check the home for any issues that developed while you were away (leaks, pests, storm damage)
•[ ] Test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors
•[ ] Check the HVAC filter and replace if needed
•[ ] Stock the pantry and refrigerator
•[ ] Confirm your internet and cable service is active
•[ ] Test all appliances and systems

Florida Administrative Tasks

•[ ] Update your address with the post office for Florida mail
•[ ] Register your vehicle in Florida if you spend more than 90 days (required by law)
•[ ] Obtain a Florida driver's license if you plan to establish Florida residency
•[ ] If establishing Florida residency, file a Declaration of Domicile with the county clerk

Establishing Florida Residency (If Applicable)

Many snowbirds eventually decide to make Florida their primary residence — and for good reason. Florida has no state income tax, which can mean significant savings for retirees.

To establish Florida residency:

Spend more than 183 days per year in Florida

File a Declaration of Domicile with your Florida county

Obtain a Florida driver's license within 30 days of establishing residency

Update your voter registration to Florida

Update your will, trusts, and estate documents to reflect Florida law

Notify Pennsylvania of your change in domicile

Important: Consult with a tax professional and estate attorney when changing your state of domicile. The process has legal and financial implications that vary by individual situation.

Making the Most of Your Florida Season

Get Connected in Your Community

•Join your HOA or community association
•Find local clubs, activities, and social groups (pickleball, golf, arts, etc.)
•Identify your nearest grocery stores, pharmacies, and medical facilities
•Connect with other PA snowbirds in your community — the network is invaluable

Plan Your Return Trip

•Schedule your Pennsylvania home to be checked and prepared for your return
•Arrange for lawn care and landscaping to resume in PA
•Plan your Florida home closing procedures (water shutoff, AC settings, pest control)
•Consider a professional property management company to watch your Florida home while you are away
